CASE STUDY: Diving Through XML
Soil Machine Dynamics Ltd (SMD) is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of remote intervention equipment, operating in hazardous environments worldwide. With a strong and unique heritage and a proven track record in subsea engineering, SMD has grown to be the number one independent designer and manufacturer of work class and specialist subsea Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) worldwide. One of the functions of their mini submersibles (and ‘not-so-mini’ submersibles) is to work at various depths underwater, inspecting and repairing oil rigs whilst attached to high voltage cables. They are remotely controlled and operated from above.
SMD provides a set of publications to support the operation of this equipment. The Allan Webb team plans to take the existing publications and re-author them into an XML format. This will make them interactive and viewable from an SMD website managed and administered by Allan Webb’s Technical Authors.
We currently have a Technical Author on site doing some basic publication formatting work and making improvements to their publications. SMD aim to improve the supportability aspects of their equipment to cater for the after sales market and look to improve their Illustrated Parts Catalogues (IPCs) and spares support. Our defence skills in obsolescence management and supportability are the perfect match to aid SMD’s development in this area. Allan Webb looks forward to providing SMD with continued support.
